The first via ferrata in the Alps was established on the Dachstein 170 years ago. Today, Ramsau am Dachstein is Austria’s top via ferrata destination. A total of 19 via ferrata routes are located on the southern face of Styria’s highest mountain and can be tackled starting from Ramsau.
Via ferrata hiking is the secured version of rock climbing. The route is secured with fixed ropes and bolts, allowing even less experienced climbers to enjoy the thrill of mountaineering amidst steep cliffs. As a reward, climbers are treated to breathtaking panoramic views from the Dachstein: to the north as far as the Czech Republic and to the Slovenian Triglav Mountains in the south.
